Content and sources

LingoNeko uses different sources for different parts of the site. The sources for word definitions may differ from those used for word frequency or grammatical forms.

Word frequency

Frequency data helps the Word Game choose new vocabulary. It also helps distinguish easier and harder words within the same level.

The source matters. Written language and subtitles give different views of how words are used. A frequency ranking is useful guidance, but it cannot tell us which words every learner will need.

Adapted stories

Stories adapted from another publication carry a credit with the text. The credit identifies the source and includes the author and license where supplied.

Audio

Grammar Journey uses synthesized speech for generated lesson audio. It can also use existing dictionary recordings.

Content review

Some grammar lessons are still awaiting native-speaker review. Checks during development catch problems such as missing audio and inconsistent exercise data. They cannot establish that every sentence sounds natural.

If you notice something wrong, please report it beside the word or story. For a problem elsewhere, use Feedback and include the page address.

Norwegian

Dictionary content includes input from Språkrådet, the University of Bergen, and Det Norske Akademi for Språk og Litteratur. When a lookup needs an official fallback, results come from Bokmålsordboka, published by Språkrådet and the University of Bergen.

Word forms are derived from Norsk Ordbank – Bokmål, maintained by the University of Bergen and Språkrådet, under CC BY 4.0. Synonym prompts are derived from the linked headwords in this dictionary's own definitions.

Vocabulary-frequency signals in the Word Game combine CLARINO Norsk aviskorpus (CC BY-NC 4.0), OpenSubtitles2018 via hermitdave/FrequencyWords (CC BY-SA 4.0), and NB N-gram digibok from Nasjonalbiblioteket/Språkbanken (CC0).

Japanese

Frequency-aware sorting and practice use the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese word list, maintained by the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics.

Word definitions come from the Japanese WordNet (NICT, Francis Bond, and Takayuki Kuribayashi) and Japanese Wiktionary.
