Fewer repeats, more clarity on your level
A user pointed out that the word game was showing the same word way too often during review, sometimes over and over in one sitting. I tracked that down and fixed it, so review words now rotate properly instead of getting stuck on one. They also mentioned that losing the old A1 through C level picker left them unsure where they stood, so I added a small badge on the practice screen showing your estimated level, based on your actual accuracy over time rather than a single round. Thanks for the report, keep it coming.

Richer Stats and Working Google Sign In
Google sign in on web apps finally works, so you can log in and sync your progress without the previous hiccups. Alongside that, My Stats got a major upgrade. A new Proficiency card estimates your CEFR level and shows how many words you actually know. A Practice Activity calendar tracks your study habit across the past year. A redesigned Skills section breaks down accuracy across recognition, recall, listening, sentences, and word connections, each with a plain explanation of what it tests.
Chinese Dictionary is live
Crawlable word, story, and practice pages are now generated for the Chinese Dictionary, matching the Norwegian Dictionary's build pipeline.
Sign in with email
You can now sign in with just your email address if Google sign in does not work for you. Opening the same account from a different method does not create a duplicate account. We also fixed a rare bug where the app could suggest the wrong recovery option after a sign in conflict, made the Norwegian letter buttons and search bar easier to tap on mobile, and cleaned up a few small display issues in stories and search results.
Expanded dictionary coverage and refreshed updates page
Added 434 dictionary senses and 691 recordings, removed 18 outdated senses and 16 recordings, refreshed 106 pronunciations, expanded sensitive word filtering, and redesigned the updates page with clearer cards, mobile styling, ten item loading, and tests.
New audio, hundreds of words and sentences added
We added recordings for 145 new words and 269 new example sentences, and re-recorded audio for 115 existing words to fix quality issues. A couple of old sentence recordings that no longer fit were removed, the app icons got a refresh, and one small correction was made to the inflections data.
Synonym practice is now live
The Word Game can now teach and practice Norwegian words with related meanings. It introduces the connection first, explains it in context, and only then brings it back for review, so you build usable vocabulary without being marked down for a relationship you haven't seen yet.
Easier Norwegian practice
Improved word feedback, spelling repair, Norwegian letter buttons, and vocabulary usefulness data.
More vocabulary and smoother everyday learning
The dictionary now includes dozens of new entries with word and sentence audio. Norwegian letter keys make search and practice easier, English translations appear by default, sentence controls are clearer, story updates arrive without stale results, and improved page details help words and stories appear more clearly in search and shared links.
Better support for new Norwegian learners
Beginner practice now focuses more on everyday words and adds Norwegian letter keys for typed answers.
New stories and smoother practice
Explore 12 new Norwegian stories with audio, images, and quizzes. Practice now avoids immediate word repeats, menus work better on small screens, and reading pages are easier to use.
Word Game gets a mobile polish pass and cleaner outcome icons
The correct, almost, and wrong badges you see after each word game answer now use crisp vector checkmarks, tildes, and X marks instead of relying on your phone's font to draw those symbols, so they look sharp and properly centered on any device. On mobile, tightened spacing in the toolbar and stats header frees up extra room for the answer explanation panel, and pronunciation text picks up a slightly bolder weight for better readability. Behind the scenes, the word list also grew with a batch of new vocabulary audio, some sentence audio was retired, and a few word entries in the data file were tidied up.
Reset your progress whenever you want a clean slate
My Stats now has a Danger Zone with a Reset My Progress button, built from your feedback about words getting stuck as "learning" just from trying out the app. One click, with a clear warning first, wipes your saved words, practice history, streaks, and quest progress, both on this device and in your account if you are signed in. Alongside that, this batch of changes also lightens up bold text across the landing page and stats screens for a cleaner look, and fixes a bug in the Word Game where certain words with too few quiz options would skip a review they were due for instead of testing them a different way.
Word Game gets a visual refresh and a new personal-best streak
This update swaps the app's typeface to Source Sans 3/Source Serif 4, bumps up several undersized font sizes, and switches game labels and buttons to Title Case for a more polished look. The Word Game now tracks and syncs a longest-streak record to My Stats, spaces out review questions more evenly once a round's word budget runs out, and caches a repeated string-parsing step that was causing a noticeable stutter on multiple-choice questions. Numerous other files (auth, stories, quiz, word list, stats) received supporting tweaks to match the new styling and streak feature.
Refined Word Game experience
Redesigned the teaching reveal, typography, progress header, controls, audio prompt, responsive spacing, mobile answer area, reporting flow, and game menu. The layout now adapts cleanly across screen sizes while keeping explanations readable and preventing unwanted movement, clipping, overlap, and scrolling.
Faster, more reliable navigation, plus the analytics needed to measure it
This update makes the site noticeably lighter for new visitors. The dictionary and word-game data no longer download automatically on the homepage, only when someone actually starts searching or practicing (respecting data-saver settings too). It also fixes several navigation bugs where switching between Words, Stories, My Words, and Word Game could leave stale content, stuck audio, or broken pages behind. Finally, it adds the tracking needed to see how people actually use the app, including searches, practice sessions, story reading, saved words, and to measure page speed going forward.
New Chimes, Cleaner Cards
The game now has a small voice of its own, a new family of chimes: streaks, a cleared review queue, and a completed round, built from the same tonal palette as the familiar right/wrong sounds, layered in with a priority system so a big moment isn't cut off by a routine answer chime underneath it. Dictionary search results are also easier to navigate by keyboard. Expanded entries no longer bury their save and report buttons inside one giant clickable card, and fallback definitions consistently sort after the site's own words.
Credit for Close Enough
Typed cloze answers now accept correctly-inflected synonyms and give partial credit with a correction note for honest near-misses (such as right verb, wrong tense), plus fairer scoring of fill-in-the-blank sentences based on surrounding-word difficulty, blank position, and answer-choice similarity.
Smarter, More Focused Word Game Practice
This update makes practice more adaptive to how you learn: the game now better distinguishes recognition, context, listening, and productive recall, adjusts follow-up questions after a miss, and avoids treating an easier recovery question as mastery of the original skill. It also adds more varied and reliable context questions, keeps single-letter alphabet entries out of random practice without hiding meaningful words in stories, and refines a few navigation details for a calmer, smoother interface.
Words That Fit How You'll Actually Hear Them
We rebuilt how the game decides which Norwegian words are worth your time and how it remembers what you know. Word frequency used to come from one source, newspaper text, so the deck leaned toward headline vocabulary you'd rarely say out loud. It's now blended from three registers: newspapers, subtitles from spoken dialogue, and a century of digitized books, so a word only rises to the top if it earns its place across how Norwegians write, speak, and read. Your memory of each word got more honest too. Recognizing it, producing it, hearing it, and using it in context are now tracked as separate skills rather than one blurred score, review timing eases in gradually as a word fades instead of snapping from "fine" to "due" overnight, and a smarter question picker reads your actual weak spots round to round, so practice should start feeling less like a quiz and more like it's paying attention.
Under the Hood: A Cleaner Way to Navigate
We've replaced the old dropdown menu for switching between Words, Sentences, Stories, Word Game, and My Words with a proper navigation bar. This is a tab strip at the top on desktop, and a bottom tab bar on mobile, so you always know where you are and where you can go. My Stats now lives as a small icon in the header, filters got a lighter, more distinct look from navigation, and the Word Game screen is tidier with its round controls always visible instead of tucked behind a "..." menu. We also gave the What's New page a matching header and cleaned up its styling to feel like part of the same site.
Under the Hood: A Smoother, More Accessible Norwegian
We've been polishing the experience behind the scenes. Sign-in now works reliably if you've added the app to your home screen, keyboard and screen-reader navigation is smoother when moving between pages, and we refreshed the visual styling for a more consistent look throughout. The Word Game also got some mobile touch-ups along the way.
Smarter "Keep Reading" suggestions, new vocabulary, and refreshed audio
We've added a "Keep Reading" recommendation at the end of each story that points you to a well-matched next read based on level and topic, expanded the word list with dozens of new vocabulary entries, and refreshed several audio clips and images across the app.
Screen reader fixes and a My Words syncing fix
The genre, favorite-stories, and show/hide-translations dropdowns now correctly announce what they do to screen readers. Previously they were unlabeled to assistive tech even though they were visually clear. My Words also now refreshes properly across the whole Word List tab (not just the My Words view) when a sync from another device comes in, so saved-word stars stay accurate everywhere. Under the hood, this batch also adds an automated accessibility check that now runs on every change to catch this class of issue going forward.
A smoother Word Game on mobile
Word Game rounds now use a compact options menu for translations, reporting questions, and ending a session, while the Next button remains within easy reach at the bottom of the screen. Question cards use space more efficiently, typed fill-in-the-blank exercises always keep their English clue visible, and duplicate dictionary results for certain number words have been removed.
Smarter practice and smoother sign-in
The Word Game now favors useful Norwegian vocabulary suited to your current ability, while preserving scheduled reviews and words you have saved. Google sign-in is more reliable in the installed web app, mobile text wraps more cleanly, and a new What’s New page makes it easy to follow future improvements.
